I’ll be 52 years old on Monday… It’s two years since both my parents died of cancer, 8 days apart, leaving me adrift in the world an “only child”, and childless… I’ve changed so many things in my life since then. It’s true, the dying teach you things about life, and not just the usual “Life’s short” sort of lesson.
One thing I planned to change but still haven’t tackled is my fitness, so after a week’s tentative, unplanned (and very unsuccessful) morning run (as in run for 20 seconds, then walk, feeling miserably defeated) I’ve today started the C25K, recommended to me by a friend here in France. So, at 10am – it IS Saturday after all! – I set off, with my ultra-fit husband keeping the time for me, and I’m ridiculously proud to say I completed the set 20 minutes exercise, and after about 2 minutes walking around the garden afterwards, laughing at the swimming pool with it’s layer of ice on top, I honestly felt like I could do an extra 5 minutes if I had to… I enjoyed it so much, I’ll have to make sure I have the rest day tomorrow, not least because I KNOW I won’t run in the rain, and you never know how long this glorious winter weather will last, here in south west France.
Enough healthiness for one day though – we’re going out for a pre-birthday lunch to an wonderful Italian restaurant, which is about half an hour’s drive away. On the menu – Buffalo mozzarella with roasted squash, Braised beef cheek and gingerbread pannacotta with raspberry coulis….. Maybe I SHOULD run tomorrow after all!
Fitness is not about being better than someone else… It’s about being better than you used to be.
