Happy birthday, Mum…

Mum would have been 85 today… so it was very appropriate to turn my quote-a-day calendar to find this particular quotation. Yes, because she was always a brave lady and never forgot what was sweet in life. However, reading it today it made me think of my Mother on one particular day: 4th December 2014. Undeterred she set out to meet her future, knowing that future was death. Her husband of 59 years had died in the early hours but by mid-mornimg she had convinced the Macmillan doctor that she didn’t need more time to consider her decision, made the previous day. She was going to have her feeding tube removed so that she could be moved into a hospice. Yes, they were meant to be going in together and she would now be moving there without my Father. However, her decision was made and she was sticking to it – she wanted “to be with Alan”.

So, knowing it meant she would only have a few days to live she sat bolt upright, calm and with such dignity and let the nurse slowly remove the tube which was keeping her alive…  I sat and watched, in awe of her.

“Sometimes it isn’t fighting that’s brave, its facing the death you know is coming.”
