Three years ago today, my mission to reunite my parents was finally achieved. A sympathetic Macmillan doctor helped Dad keep the promise he’d made Mum 59 years earlier. He’d promised they would be side by side until death parted them, but the hospital had separated them for the most difficult two weeks of their lives. This doctor arranged for them to be put in a room together, thus making an incredible difference to Dad’s last 12 hours on earth, to Mum’s experience of his death, and to my last memory of my father.
